Mexico Advances in FIFA World Cup 2026

Guadalajara, Mexico - On June 19, co-host Mexico became the first nation to qualify for the Round of 32 in the FIFA World Cup 2026, narrowly defeating South Korea 1-0 in a gripping Group A match held in Guadalajara.

Luis Romo was the hero for Javier Aguirre's team, netting the crucial goal shortly after halftime, igniting celebrations among the home crowd and marking a strong start for Mexico in the tournament.

Match Highlights

This victory followed Mexico's initial 2-0 triumph over South Africa, ensuring their advancement to the knockout stage with one group match remaining. El Tri currently leads Group A with six points and a total of three goals.

Despite a vibrant atmosphere in the stadium, the first half saw few clear chances as both teams struggled for dominance. However, Mexico appeared more aggressive after the break, with Jesus Gallardo testing the South Korean defense shortly after the restart.

The decisive moment came in the 50th minute due to a miscommunication between South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu and defender Lee Gihyuk. Romo seized the opportunity, quickly reacting to the loose ball and calmly scoring into an empty net.

South Korea sought to equalize but Mexico remained a threat on counterattacks. Kim made a crucial save in the 75th minute, denying Raul Jimenez from close range and keeping South Korea in the game.

The match's climax featured a remarkable double save by Mexican goalkeeper Raul Rangel, who thwarted attempts from Cho Guesung and Yang Hyunjun just three minutes before the final whistle, ensuring a clean sheet and securing the win for Mexico.

This victory also marked a historic achievement for Mexico, as it recorded three consecutive wins in FIFA World Cup history for the first time.

With their qualification confirmed, Mexico will face a third-placed team from either Group C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32 in Mexico City on June 30.
