Melbourne Renegades to Seek New Ownership

The Melbourne Renegades, a team in the Big Bash League, is officially on the market following Cricket Australia's approval of a privatization model aimed at enhancing self-determination within its T20 league.

Cricket Australia has announced plans to solicit bids from private investors for complete ownership of the Melbourne Renegades.

The new ownership structure is expected to be established by the 2027-28 seasons of both the Big Bash League and the Women's Big Bash League, with the current season remaining unaffected by this sale process, as reported by a sports news outlet.

Currently, the team is being managed in a caretaker capacity by Cricket Australia, which recently secured West Indies captain Hayley Matthews for the women's team.

Additionally, Cricket Australia is contemplating the sale of other franchises under the same privatization model, allowing each state to decide when to sell stakes in their respective BBL teams.

Teams like Hobart Hurricanes, Perth Scorchers, and Melbourne Stars are reportedly exploring private investment opportunities.

Conversely, franchises such as Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat, and Adelaide Strikers have opted against private investment for now, although they may consider it in the future.

Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird stated that the governing body will maintain authority over international match scheduling, player availability, salary caps, and media rights.

While Cricket Australia retains the power to approve or reject potential investors and set reserve prices, any modifications to team names, colors, or branding will require approval. For the Melbourne Renegades, Cricket Australia will be the approving authority, while other teams will be overseen by their respective state bodies.

Baird emphasized that Cricket Australia and its state members are committed to investing in and expanding the BBL and WBBL, as well as promoting cricket at all levels.

He noted, "By facilitating private investment in the Big Bash Leagues, Cricket Australia is taking a strategic step to secure the long-term future of the sport, foster growth, and ensure continued investment in community cricket, grassroots participation, and pathways for both domestic and international players."
