Meg Lanning Takes the Helm as Captain of UP Warriorz for Upcoming WPL Season
Meg Lanning Named Captain of UP Warriorz
New Delhi, January 4: Meg Lanning, the renowned Australian captain with multiple World Cup victories, has been appointed as the new leader of the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) ahead of the season commencing on January 9.
Lanning, who has reached the WPL finals three times with the Delhi Capitals, was acquired by UP Warriorz for ₹1.90 crores during last year's auction. She is celebrated not only for her batting prowess but also for her exceptional leadership skills in international cricket.
In a recent announcement on X, UP Warriorz expressed their excitement, stating, “The Blueprint of Success. The Icon of Leadership. Captain MEG #UPWarriorz #UttarDega #TATAWPL #MegLanning.”
Under Lanning's captaincy, the Delhi Capitals reached the finals in all three seasons but unfortunately did not secure a championship, losing to Mumbai Indians by seven wickets, Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight wickets, and narrowly to Mumbai by eight runs last season while chasing 150 runs.
With 952 runs in 27 WPL matches, Lanning ranks as the third-highest run-scorer in the league's history, boasting an average of 39.66 and a strike rate exceeding 127, including nine fifties and a top score of 92. Her impressive record includes 17 international centuries and over 8,300 runs, solidifying her status as one of the greatest batters in cricket history.
The Australian cricket legend, who has clinched five ICC Women’s T20 World Cup titles and two ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup trophies—six of which were achieved as captain—unexpectedly retired from international cricket last year at the age of 31.
After finishing last in the previous season with only three wins out of eight matches, UP Warriorz will kick off their new campaign against Gujarat Giants starting January 10.
