Matthew Mott Appointed Head Coach of Sydney Sixers

Sydney, Australia - July 22: Matthew Mott has been named the new head coach of the Sydney Sixers for the Big Bash League (BBL), succeeding James Hopes, who recently departed to join Queensland.

In this transition, Mott will resign from his position as the coach of the Sixers' Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) team, with the club set to announce his successor later this week, as reported by a sports news outlet.

The former England white-ball coach, who served as an assistant on the Sixers' BBL coaching staff last season, has inked a two-year deal. He is now the third head coach for the BBL this year, following Hopes, who took over from Greg Shipperd but left just two months into his tenure.

Mott was appointed as the WBBL head coach last year, and there were discussions about him managing both the men's and women's teams. However, the Sixers decided to maintain separate coaching roles, considering the WBBL season runs from late October to early December, while the BBL season starts shortly after and lasts until the end of January.

Rachael Haynes, the general manager of Sydney Sixers, stated, “To ensure continuity and long-term stability across both programs, we have appointed distinct head coaches for each team, especially with the potential for the BBL and WBBL schedules to change each season.”

She added, “Although we evaluated Matthew’s capability to lead both teams, we opted for a long-term strategy to guarantee consistent and stable leadership across both squads. The strength of the candidate we have chosen for the WBBL head coach role reassured us that this was the right decision for both programs, and we anticipate announcing that news soon.”

Expressing his gratitude, incoming coach Matthew Mott remarked, “I’m honored to take on the role of head coach for the men’s program. Being part of the Sixers family for a long time makes this opportunity incredibly exciting.”

He continued, “This club has a rich history and a winning culture, and I’m eager to build upon the solid foundations laid over many seasons. Having closely worked with the men’s program, I’ve witnessed the talent and potential within this group.”

While Mott expressed disappointment at stepping down from the WBBL head coach position, he conveyed his appreciation for his time with the women’s program and wished the players and support staff the best for WBBL|12.

Under Mott’s guidance, Australia achieved a remarkable record of 26 consecutive ODI victories, establishing itself as a leading force in international women’s cricket. Earlier in his coaching career, he led the New South Wales Blues to victory in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 in 2009.

Mott has also held the position of head coach at Glamorgan County Cricket Club for three seasons and currently works as a T20 consultant for Lancashire, in addition to being the head coach of the Manchester Super Giants women's team in The Hundred.

Beyond his head coaching roles, Mott has contributed to various elite programs, including Australia’s men’s team, the Under-19 program, and franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

As a player, Mott represented Queensland and Victoria, enjoying a successful first-class career with 66 matches, accumulating 3,723 runs at an average of 33.84, which includes seven centuries and 20 half-centuries.
