Hollard's Impressive Debut Performance

In Belfast, Ireland, Matthew Hollard made a remarkable entrance into international cricket, earning the Player of the Match title in his debut against the reigning World Champions, India. The Irish bowler achieved impressive figures of 3 wickets for 28 runs, playing a crucial role in limiting India to 148 runs after Ireland set a challenging target of 183.

This victory marks Ireland's first international win over India, giving them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Hollard's debut was highlighted by his second delivery, which saw him dismiss Ishan Kishan, thanks to a spectacular catch by wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker. He followed this by taking the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar in quick succession.

Reflecting on his debut, Hollard expressed, "Honestly, I never anticipated this. I always believed in my abilities, but debuting against India feels like a dream come true. My family traveled from Johannesburg to support me, and it’s surreal."

He is now the second Irish cricketer to receive a Player of the Match award on T20I debut, following Andre Botha's achievement in 2008. Hollard's figures of 3/28 are the second-best by an Irish player against India in T20Is.

Recalling the moment he took his first wicket, he shared, "It’s amusing. After my first ball, I turned to Harry and said, 'The first one’s done.' When that ball went up, I held my breath for a moment. Once Lorcan caught it, all my emotions just burst out. It was incredibly special."

Originally from Boksburg, South Africa, Hollard discussed his journey to representing Ireland. He stated, "I’ve wanted to come to Ireland since 2019, but COVID brought many challenges. My brother encouraged me to come, and since then, Cricket Ireland has supported me immensely. I’m truly grateful for their backing."

With this win, Ireland joins the ranks of teams that have defeated India in international matches, becoming the 11th team to do so. They have now triumphed over eight Full Member nations, with only Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka remaining on their list.

Hollard also made history as the first player from Balbriggan Cricket Club to represent Ireland. He expressed gratitude to his supporters, saying, "You may not have known me before, but you welcomed me to play cricket here. Thank you for your support and for this journey."

Having his family present for his debut was a significant moment for Hollard. He remarked, "I haven’t seen them in a while, and having them here is just perfect. Seeing me receive my cap and cheering from the sidelines is unbelievable. To my family back home, I appreciate your support and messages. I know you’re celebrating, so thank you!"
