Historic Appointment in European Football
Marie-Louise Eta has etched her name in history by becoming the interim head coach of Union Berlin, marking a groundbreaking moment as she is the first woman to lead a men's team in one of Europe's top five leagues.
At 34 years old, Eta will guide the team for the remainder of the season following the recent firing of Steffen Baumgart, who was let go after a disappointing 3-1 loss to the last-placed 1. FC Heidenheim. Currently, Union Berlin sits in 11th place in the Bundesliga, having struggled with form, managing only two victories in their last 14 league matches in 2026.
Eta is no stranger to breaking barriers; in 2023, she made history as the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga. Additionally, she took charge on the sidelines during a match in 2024 when the head coach, Nenad Bjelica, faced suspension.
A former youth international for Germany, Eta was part of the 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam squad that clinched the UEFA Women’s Champions League title in 2010.
She has also been involved in Union Berlin’s youth development, previously managing the club’s under-19 team.
Her appointment represents a significant milestone in European football. Although women like Carolina Morace and Corinne Diacre have previously coached men's teams, this is the first instance of such a role in the top tier of one of Europe’s major leagues.
With only five matches left in the season, Eta's primary goal will be to stabilize the team's performance and ensure Union Berlin concludes the season safely.
