Lisbon [Portugal], June 10: Benfica has officially announced the appointment of Marco Silva as their new head coach, succeeding Jose Mourinho.

Silva has signed a two-year deal with the option for an additional year, marking his return to coaching in Portugal after spending several years in England, according to reports.

His most recent role was with Fulham, where he spent five years, successfully leading the team from the Championship to the Premier League in his first season and establishing them as a consistent mid-table team in the top tier of English football.

Despite Fulham's offer of a new contract to keep him, Silva chose to return to his homeland after a decade of managing in England, where he also had stints with Hull City, Everton, and Watford.

Silva steps into a Benfica team that finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, remaining unbeaten but trailing champions Porto by eight points and falling two points short of Sporting CP.

In related news, Mourinho is expected to make a return to Real Madrid for a second term, having previously managed the club until 2013 with notable success.

Additionally, Real Madrid and coach Alvaro Arbeloa have mutually agreed to part ways, with the club expressing gratitude for his long-standing commitment, which began in their youth academy and continued through his playing and coaching career.

In an official statement, Real Madrid commended Arbeloa for his unwavering loyalty and professionalism, stating that he embodies the club's core values.
