From Humble Beginnings to IPL Success

The IPL 2026 auction was a pivotal moment for Mangesh Yadav, not only because he was signed by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for an impressive Rs 5.20 crore, but also as a turning point for his family after years of struggle. Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, Mangesh grew up in a modest household. His father, Ram Awadh Yadav, a truck driver, would rise at 3 AM to navigate treacherous roads to support the family.

Despite his father's encouragement for Mangesh's cricket aspirations, they faced numerous financial hurdles. To fund coaching, equipment, and travel, his father often borrowed money and took loans, as their financial situation was strained. At the time of Mangesh's IPL debut, the family was still living in a rented house in Borgaon, approximately 75 kilometers from Chhindwara city. His father's worries about affording coaching fees led to many sleepless nights, compounded by the stress of his demanding job.

"I struggled a lot for money. There were nights I couldn't sleep, worrying about how to support him. The life of a truck driver is tough; you hardly have time to eat or rest. When the truck is full, you stress about unloading, and when it's empty, you have to find more goods to transport," Mangesh's father shared.

Before transitioning to formal cricket, Mangesh earned money by participating in tennis-ball tournaments, often traveling long distances via state buses and unreserved train compartments across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. His greatest achievement was becoming self-sufficient, no longer needing to ask his father for financial help.

At 16, after excelling in a local competition, a family friend assisted him in moving to Noida, where his structured cricket career began. Coach Phoolchand Sharma from Wonder Cricket Club recognized his talent and waived his dormitory fees for three years. Mangesh credits Sharma for his ability to pursue professional cricket.

"If I am playing cricket today, it is because of Phool Chand sir. When I moved to Delhi, my father had given me Rs 24,000 with great difficulty, and I quickly ran out of money in the first month," Mangesh recounted.

Phoolchand Sharma noted, "I saw Mangesh was a talented bowler, but he lacked basic necessities. I invited him to stay at the hostel, which marked the start of his journey. I believe that if a player has talent, they should have the opportunity to eat, stay, and practice, regardless of their financial background."

Mangesh's IPL contract has transformed his family's life. Once questioned by relatives, his father's sacrifices have finally been recognized. The success has brought pride and dignity to their family, elevating his father's standing in the community. Mangesh expressed gratitude for his coach and supporters, highlighting the journey from hardship to achievement.

"I never imagined a truck driver could earn such respect. Mangesh has done more for me than I could have ever hoped for," his father remarked regarding his son's IPL deal. As RCB prepares to defend their title after a long wait, Mangesh has a chance to make his mark in the tournament opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28, especially with Dayal unavailable.
