Manav Suthar Shines on Test Debut, Showcasing BCCI's Talent Development
Suthar's Impressive Test Debut
Manav Suthar's remarkable performance during his Test debut highlights the effective talent identification framework established by the BCCI, remarked India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on Monday, following the home team's decisive victory over Afghanistan within three days.
Kotak made these comments after India secured their largest innings win, triumphing by an innings and 300 runs.
Suthar emerged as the star of the match, achieving a total of seven wickets, six of which came in the first innings. His ability to consistently target the middle and off-stumps while generating optimal spin was commendable.
Kotak praised Suthar's bowling, stating, "He performed exceptionally well. He is a promising talent. Over the past few years, Manav has consistently played for India A and the Emerging team. This opportunity was significant for him, and he capitalized on it. His batting was also impressive, which is quite gratifying."
He credited Suthar's success to the BCCI's structured pathways that identify and nurture talent effectively.
"The BCCI framework is beneficial as it allows players to participate in numerous matches before reaching the Test level. From age-group cricket to the Ranji Trophy and India A, the exposure is invaluable for all players," Kotak explained.
"Manav has been performing consistently for three to four years, so I wish him the best moving forward," he added.
When asked about the decision to select Suthar over Harsh Dubey, Kotak provided insight into the selection process.
"In the past three years, Manav participated in a camp I conducted at the Centre of Excellence. He was also part of the India Emerging team during the Emerging Asia Cup and played for India A in the series against Australia and England. His bowling style is very promising, and he has shown remarkable consistency and dedication," Kotak elaborated.
"I had a strong feeling he would represent India. It ultimately depends on individual growth and development speed," he noted.
"Regarding why Manav was chosen over Harsh, that decision lies with the head coach and captain. Harsh is included in the one-day squad, so he may have opportunities there. He has performed well in the IPL and Ranji Trophy, but only one player can be selected, and they likely felt Manav was the right choice this time."
Washington Sundar's Growth as a Player
Washington Sundar made his debut for the senior Indian team back in 2017, prior to Kotak's tenure at the National Cricket Academy. Over the years, Kotak has been impressed by the all-rounder's work ethic, describing it as "brilliant."
"Washington has been part of the system since my first India A series in 2019. He played for India before I joined, so he has been around for quite some time," Kotak remarked.
"He has matured significantly. Observing Washington in T20 matches, you can see his temperament, whether he is bowling in the powerplay or batting. His approach remains consistent, regardless of whether he plays or not," he added.
"Some players may show disappointment, but Washington has maintained a steady demeanor throughout," Kotak concluded.
