Golaghat (Assam) [India], August 2: Assam's Cabinet Minister Atul Bora expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain for securing a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He emphasized that her dedication and accomplishments serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes throughout the state.

Lovlina clinched the silver in the women's 75kg boxing category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, narrowly losing to Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree with a 4-1 split decision in a fiercely contested final on Saturday.

In his congratulatory message, Bora commended Lovlina for her unwavering commitment and significant contributions to both Assam and the nation. He stated, “Heartfelt congratulations to Lovlina Borgohain for her silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. We take pride in her dedication and contributions to our state and country. She has now become a role model for young athletes in Assam.”

The gold medal match was a strategic battle, with both competitors carefully waiting for the right moments to strike. Greentree ramped up her efforts in the final moments, but Lovlina skillfully dodged her attacks while landing several effective punches.

As the final bell rang, both boxers raised their hands, believing they had done enough to secure victory. However, after a tense deliberation, the judges awarded the match to Greentree by a 4-1 split decision, leaving Lovlina with the silver medal.

This result extended Lovlina's quest for her first Commonwealth Games gold medal, but it marked her inaugural medal at the CWG. Previously, she faced a quarterfinal exit at Gold Coast 2018 and was eliminated in the first round at Birmingham 2022.

The 28-year-old boxer reached the final after receiving a direct semifinal berth and achieving a commanding 5-0 victory over Tuvalu's Tarona Taafaki, ensuring her place on the podium.

Lovlina is recognized as one of India's top boxers, having won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, making her only the third Indian boxer to achieve an Olympic podium finish. A former world champion and recipient of the Arjuna Award, she also secured gold at the Elite Women’s Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad in 2025. Outside the boxing ring, she serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for the Assam Government.

India concluded its boxing campaign in Glasgow with its most successful Commonwealth Games performance to date, amassing a record total of 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver.

The gold medals were won by Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), and Ankush Panghal (80kg), while silver medals were claimed by Jadumani Singh (55kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), and Narender Berwal (+90kg).

This impressive tally surpassed India's previous best performances in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, where the nation had previously secured three gold medals each at Delhi 2010, Gold Coast 2018, and Birmingham 2022, showcasing India's growing prowess in the sport on the Commonwealth stage.
