Glasgow, Scotland - Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain expressed her excitement after securing a spot in the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games. She admitted that reaching this stage so early was unexpected, but it has boosted her confidence in her pursuit of a gold medal.

Borgohain has guaranteed herself a medal in the women's 75kg category after receiving a bye into the quarter-finals, which means she doesn't need to compete to earn a podium finish. The Commonwealth Games boxing format awards two bronze medals in each weight class, with both losing semi-finalists receiving one.

In a statement to the press, Lovlina shared her surprise at advancing directly to the semifinals, especially considering her previous two Commonwealth Games experiences where she did not secure a medal.

She remarked, "This is surprising news for me as well. I didn't anticipate reaching the semifinals this quickly, especially since I didn't win a medal in the last two Commonwealth Games, where I had to fight four or five bouts. This time, advancing directly to the semifinals is a significant achievement for me."

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist and former world champion is set to face Taafaki in the semifinals on July 31, with a place in the final on the line. Regardless of the outcome, this medal will mark her first at the Commonwealth Games.

Lovlina had previously exited in the quarter-finals at Gold Coast 2018 after losing to the eventual champion Sandy Ryan and faced an opening-round defeat at Birmingham 2022.
