Martinez Defends Refereeing Standards

Missouri [US], July 11: Lisandro Martinez, the Argentine defender, has brushed aside worries regarding officiating at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He commended the match officials and emphasized that his team's primary focus is on their performance on the field.

In a press conference prior to Argentina's quarterfinal showdown with Switzerland, Martinez dismissed any notions of controversy surrounding the refereeing during the tournament.

When questioned about the officiating, he firmly stated, “No, absolutely nothing,” indicating that he had no issues to raise regarding the referees.

The defending champions made it to the quarterfinals after an impressive comeback, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the last 11 minutes to win 3-2 against Egypt.

This match sparked controversy, particularly from the Egyptian Football Association, which criticized several officiating calls, including a VAR decision that disallowed a goal by Mostafa Zico in the 62nd minute. Had it been allowed, Egypt would have led 3-0 before Argentina's comeback.

Despite this, Martinez praised the referees for their efforts, suggesting that media coverage often inflates discussions about officiating.

“I believe they are doing an excellent job. This is something for you (the media), who sometimes create controversies. We focus on performing our best on the pitch and nothing else,” he remarked.

Looking ahead to the match against Switzerland, Martinez emphasized that his team will not take their opponents lightly. He acknowledged the respect they hold for every team they face and anticipates a challenging game.

“What defines this team is our respect for the opponent,” Martinez noted. “Switzerland has earned their place at this stage, and we have seen their match against Colombia. They always aim to play and are physically strong, especially in set-pieces. It promises to be an exciting match as both teams strive to play well.”
