Lionel Scaloni Set to Lead Argentina Until 2031 Amid World Cup Focus
Scaloni's Extended Tenure as Argentina's Head Coach
Missouri [US], June 29: Lionel Scaloni is poised to extend his role as the head coach of Argentina's national football team, having reportedly reached a verbal agreement to remain in charge until 2031, according to reports.
The coach, who led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is currently preparing the team for their knockout match against Cape Verde in Miami as part of the 2026 World Cup.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is keen on having Scaloni continue in his position for the long term. Prior to the World Cup in the United States, discussions took place between Scaloni's representatives and AFA officials, culminating in a verbal commitment for his extended tenure.
Journalist Diego Monroig shared insights on ESPN Mundial, stating, “Before they arrived in the United States, there were meetings between Scaloni's team and the AFA. The AFA believes Scaloni should remain as coach indefinitely. I have confirmed that there is a verbal agreement for him to lead the national team until 2031.”
Despite this agreement, Scaloni is prioritizing Argentina's World Cup journey and has requested that conversations regarding his future be deferred until after the tournament concludes. Formal discussions about his contract extension are anticipated to resume post-World Cup.
“The coach is focused on the competition and prefers not to discuss his future at this time. However, after the World Cup, they will reconnect regarding the verbal agreement that brings comfort to the AFA,” Monroig added.
Under Scaloni's leadership, Argentina has achieved a perfect record in Group J of the FIFA World Cup 2026, winning all three matches. They are set to face Egypt in the Round of 32 on July 3 (local time).
