Lionel Scaloni Discusses Hydration Breaks Ahead of Argentina vs Austria Clash
Scaloni Adjusts to New Hydration Breaks
In Arlington, Texas, on June 22, Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni shared his thoughts on the new hydration breaks implemented during the FIFA World Cup 2026. As the defending champions prepare for a pivotal Group J match against Austria on Monday, Scaloni is still adapting to these changes.
Argentina kicked off their title defense with a commanding 3-0 win over Algeria, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Lionel Messi. Meanwhile, Austria secured a 2-1 victory against Jordan in their opening match. A second win for Argentina would guarantee their advancement to the knockout stage.
Even though the game will take place indoors at Dallas Stadium, hydration breaks will still be enforced. Scaloni noted that these interruptions are influencing coaching strategies during matches.
“Everything I plan can shift based on these 22 or 23 minutes,” Scaloni remarked to reporters on Sunday, highlighting the adjustments required due to the breaks. “We have analysts reviewing the game, and we seek solutions similar to what we do during halftime. It’s a unique situation that we need to adapt to,” he added.
Scaloni also commended Austria, led by coach Ralf Rangnick, anticipating a tough match against a team recognized for its aggressive pressing and direct play style. “Austria boasts talented players and is a formidable team. They apply high pressure and play vertically, making them a serious contender,” he stated.
He continued, “Both teams have won their opening matches, which should make for an exciting game. Every match in the World Cup is challenging, especially in the group phase.”
Despite the tournament's surprises, Scaloni believes that traditional football powerhouses will eventually rise to the occasion as the competition unfolds. “The strong teams will emerge, and this World Cup will undoubtedly be tough,” he concluded.
Argentina aims to build on their strong start against Austria as they pursue a spot in the knockout rounds.
