Messi Achieves Historic Milestone

On June 17, in Missouri, Argentine football icon Lionel Messi reached a remarkable career milestone by becoming the first player to participate in six editions of the men's FIFA World Cup. This achievement occurred during Argentina's opening match against Algeria in the 2026 tournament, as reported by a leading sports network.

This match also marked Messi's 200th international appearance for Argentina, allowing him to surpass several notable players, including Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal and Mexico's Antonio Carbajal, Andres Guardado, Rafael Marquez, and Germany's Lothar Matthaus, who were previously tied with him in World Cup appearances.

Cristiano Ronaldo is anticipated to equal Messi's record when Portugal competes against Congo DR in their first match on Wednesday.

While Mexico's goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has been part of six World Cup squads, he did not play in matches during two of those tournaments.

At 38 years old, Messi already held the record for the most World Cup appearances, having surpassed Matthaus during the 2022 final in Qatar. His latest match on Tuesday was his 27th in World Cup history.

Although Messi has not officially declared his international future, he has hinted that this tournament might be his last major competition with Argentina.

Messi first made his World Cup debut in 2006 at the age of 18, scoring as a substitute in Argentina's 6-0 victory over Serbia and Montenegro.

With this latest appearance, Messi becomes only the third player in football history to achieve 200 international caps, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa in this elite group.

The players with the highest number of international caps include Cristiano Ronaldo (228), Bader Al-Mutawa (202), and Lionel Messi (200), followed by Luka Modric (198) and other football legends, according to reports from a sports analytics account.
