Messi's Remarkable Achievement in MLS

In Miami, Florida, on November 8, Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has secured the MLS Golden Boot for the second year in a row, concluding the 2026 regular season with an impressive tally of 26 goals. This achievement underscores his remarkable scoring prowess as he helps Inter Miami prepare to defend their MLS Cup title.

In the final match of the regular season against Charlotte FC, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, Messi did not score. Despite Inter Miami initially leading 3-0, Charlotte made a strong comeback to level the match. Nevertheless, Messi's goal count remained significantly ahead of his nearest rivals.

Petar Musa from FC Dallas came in second with 22 goals, while Nashville SC's Sam Surridge and Vancouver Whitecaps' Brian White followed with 21 and 20 goals, respectively. Last season, Messi netted 29 goals, marking the fourth-highest total in a single MLS season, and his latest accolade makes him the first player in league history to win back-to-back Golden Boot awards.

Messi's contributions have been vital to Inter Miami's offensive capabilities this season. The team concluded the regular season with a league-leading total of 80 goals, with Messi contributing nearly a third of that figure.

In addition to his goal-scoring feats, Messi also provided 17 assists, just one shy of the league leader, Pep Biel. His commitment was evident as he played 2,664 minutes throughout the season, highlighting his importance to the squad.

Messi's Dominance in the League

Messi led the league with 183 shot attempts, significantly ahead of Philadelphia Union's Milan Iloski, who had 122. His 76 shots on target were also 25 more than the next closest player, Denis Bouanga from LAFC.

One of Messi's most memorable performances occurred in August when he scored four goals during Inter Miami's commanding 7-1 victory over Montreal.

As Inter Miami shifts its focus to the MLS Cup playoffs, the team aims to defend its title. They finished second in the Eastern Conference, trailing Nashville SC, and will face the seventh-seeded Columbus Crew in a best-of-three first-round series.

Looking Ahead: MLS Cup and MVP Contention

Historically, no team has successfully defended the MLS Cup since the LA Galaxy did so in 2011 and 2012. On a personal level, Messi is also in the running for the MLS Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the third consecutive year. He previously made history by winning the award in successive seasons and could potentially extend that record.

The MVP award is determined through votes from media representatives, players, and club staff, with goal-scoring being one of the key factors considered.

Messi's 2026 season has also seen him take on significant responsibilities beyond club football, including leading Argentina to the World Cup final, which contributed to his fifth-place finish in the Ballon d'Or voting. He also faced personal challenges, including the loss of his father.

At 39, Messi continues to be a formidable attacking presence in the MLS, and his latest Golden Boot win adds yet another milestone to his illustrious career. With his consistent scoring throughout the regular season, he aims to maintain that momentum as Inter Miami seeks to secure back-to-back MLS Cup titles.
