Lionel Messi Honored with Prestigious Award

New York [US], June 4: Lionel Messi, the star player of Inter Miami CF and a world champion, has been honored with the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, marking him as the first footballer to achieve this esteemed recognition.


This award celebrates remarkable contributions in various fields, including sports, arts, literature, and scientific research.


The decision to honor Messi was made by a jury led by foundation president Teresa Perales, as reported by ESPN.


Messi expressed his gratitude, stating, “It is a great honor to receive this recognition, which acknowledges not just my on-field achievements but also my efforts off the field. I am truly happy and thankful. Sending a big hug to everyone. Thank you, and see you soon.”


His illustrious career includes winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, along with Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and an Olympic gold medal from Beijing.


On the club front, Messi has secured 10 La Liga championships and four UEFA Champions League titles with FC Barcelona, in addition to the 2025 MLS Cup, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, and the 2023 Leagues Cup with Inter Miami CF.
