A Brother's Watchful Eye

During the Asian Champions Trophy match against Japan, vice-captain Hardik Singh showcased his skills in the midfield, while his younger brother, Manmeet Singh, closely monitored his every move. From Hardik's ball control to his tactical decisions, Manmeet absorbed valuable insights that he hopes to apply to his own game.

Having recently contributed to India's victory in the Junior Asia Cup, Manmeet viewed this match as a prime opportunity to learn from one of the nation's top hockey talents—his elder brother. "Observing my brother closely helps me understand various strategies. It's an incredible chance for me," he remarked.

Accompanied by their parents, Sonia Kaur and Varinderpreet Singh, the family celebrated a unique milestone, witnessing both sons don the Indian jersey.

Sonia expressed her joy, stating, "What more could I wish for? Both my sons have achieved this honor."

The family's hockey legacy is profound, as Manmeet and Hardik are grandnephews of Gurmail Singh, who was part of the Indian team that clinched gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. With Manmeet now stepping into the spotlight, the family's rich hockey heritage continues to thrive.

However, having a renowned international player as an older sibling has its challenges for Manmeet. The fame and success Hardik has garnered sometimes lead to heightened expectations and comparisons.

"There was definitely pressure because my brother is a well-known player with numerous achievements. Yet, he always reminds me that our paths are distinct and that hard work is essential," Manmeet shared.

He acknowledged that feelings of comparison occasionally surfaced, especially when Hardik excelled while he was still finding his footing in the sport.

"Whenever he performed exceptionally and I struggled, I would confide in him. I worried that people might judge me as his brother who wasn't living up to expectations. But he has always been proud of my efforts," he added.
