Lalit Modi Supports Kevin Pietersen's Critique of ECB
Lalit Modi Defends Pietersen's Claims Against ECB
Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has come out in support of ex-England captain Kevin Pietersen after the latter's candid remarks about the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Pietersen stirred controversy by alleging that his international career was hampered due to conflicts with ECB officials regarding his participation in the IPL. In a recent interview with YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, he expressed that he felt targeted by the ECB for choosing the IPL over national duties.
Pietersen, who concluded his Test career with an impressive tally of 8,181 runs, including 23 centuries and 35 fifties, criticized the ECB's treatment of players. Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend Pietersen, labeling the ECB as "a pompous body full of themselves" and dismissing England's franchise competition, The Hundred, as the 'biggest fiasco'. He stated, "The biggest sacrifice by @KP24 - and a big boost for the @IPL. Will never forget this. He was critical, as far as I am concerned, for the integrity of the #IPL. Stupid as usual of the @ECB_cricket. No care for the players and fans alike."
Historically, the ECB had barred centrally contracted players from participating in the inaugural IPL in 2008, with only Dimitri Mascarenhas being allowed to play. In 2009, a three-week window was provided for players to join the IPL, during which Pietersen played for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He noted that prioritizing the league led to significant friction with the ECB.
Pietersen reflected on his sacrifices, stating, "I lost my career. That's the reason why everybody in that establishment went against me. I was 33 when my England career finished, after 104 Test matches. I should have played 150-160 Tests and scored 12,000-13,000 runs." He also mentioned that the ECB used media outlets to target him, but he now enjoys a peaceful life.
