Kylian Mbappe Shines as France Dominates Sweden 3-0 in World Cup Knockout Stage
France Secures Spot in World Cup Round of 16
New York [US], July 1: A stellar performance from captain Kylian Mbappe propelled France to a convincing 3-0 win over Sweden at the MetLife Stadium, securing their advancement to the Round of 16 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Didier Deschamps, back on the sidelines after a personal loss, witnessed his team effectively dismantle a resilient Swedish defense.
While Michael Olise showcased his playmaking skills, it was Mbappe who captured the spotlight, equaling Lionel Messi's record at the top of the tournament's goal-scoring leaderboard.
Sweden entered the match with a well-organized low-block strategy under manager Graham Potter, relying on the quick counter-attacks of Anthony Elanga and Alexander Isak to challenge the French defense. For the first 30 minutes, this tactic proved effective, limiting France to long-range attempts.
However, as the first half progressed, France began to find their rhythm. In the 40th minute, Olise nearly electrified the crowd with a stunning scissor kick that hit the post without touching the ground.
The breakthrough came just before halftime. Following a short corner taken by Ousmane Dembele and Olise, Mbappe received the ball on the left, executed a dazzling turn that left Viktor Gyokeres on the ground, and fired a precise shot into the bottom-right corner past a challenged Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
France doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Olise delivered a brilliant through ball that nutmegged captain Victor Lindelof, allowing Bradley Barcola to score with a powerful shot into the net.
The final goal was scored in the 74th minute, with Olise again playing a key role by releasing Mbappe down the flank. The French captain curled a shot into the far corner, replicating his earlier goal, bringing the score to 3-0. He exited the field to a standing ovation in the 85th minute.
Despite the scoreline, Zetterstrom was Sweden's standout player, making several exceptional saves against Adrien Rabiot and Mbappe to keep the scoreline from being worse.
Sweden's attacking trio of Isak, Gyokeres, and Elanga was effectively contained by the center-back duo of William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano, failing to register a single shot on target against Mike Maignan.
With his opening goal, Mbappe set a new record for the most knockout stage goals in World Cup history, surpassing Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo, who each scored 8.
This remarkable feat not only establishes a new record but also alters the all-time World Cup scoring rankings. Mbappe now boasts 10 knockout goals, significantly ahead of other greats in elimination matches.
His overall World Cup tally has reached 18, placing him second among all-time scorers, just behind Lionel Messi. Additionally, Mbappe's two goals in this tournament have brought his total to 6, tying him with Messi for the Golden Boot.
Olise's outstanding performance included two assists, making him the first player since Germany's Thomas Hassler in 1994 to achieve 5 assists in a single World Cup.
While Sweden's journey ends here, France confidently moves on to face Paraguay in the Round of 16 on July 4.
