Mbappe's Stellar Performance Leads France to Victory

New Jersey [US], June 17 (Media House): Kylian Mbappe showcased his extraordinary talent in international football, setting multiple records as France kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with a solid 3-1 win against Senegal.

The captain of the French team scored two goals, helping Les Bleus avenge their infamous 1-0 loss to Senegal during the 2002 World Cup. This victory marks a strong start to their quest for another title, following their triumph in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2022.

Mbappe's remarkable performance included significant milestones. With his two goals, he reached a total of 14 goals in FIFA World Cup history, making him the top scorer for France in the tournament and surpassing Just Fontaine's long-held record of 13.

The Real Madrid star also matched Germany's Gerd Muller on the all-time World Cup scoring list, with only Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazario (15), Miroslav Klose (16), and Lionel Messi (16) ahead of him. Messi had a hat-trick in Argentina's opening match against Algeria.

At just 27 years old, Mbappe has now become France's all-time leading men's international goalscorer, bringing his total to 58 goals for Les Bleus, overtaking Olivier Giroud's previous record of 57.

France broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark when Michael Olise delivered a perfectly timed pass to Mbappe, who finished with composure past Edouard Mendy. This goal set the tone for France's performance, and substitute Bradley Barcola extended the lead in the 79th minute with a skillful chipped shot.

Barcola's goal was historically significant as well; at 23 years and 287 days, he became the youngest French player to score on his FIFA World Cup debut since Thierry Henry, who was 20 years and 299 days old during France's victorious 1998 campaign.

Senegal briefly threatened to make a comeback when Ibrahim Mbaye scored, making him the youngest African scorer in FIFA World Cup history at just 18 years and 143 days. However, Mbappe ensured that there would be no late surprises.

In stoppage time, the French captain surged forward and unleashed a stunning long-range shot into the top corner, sealing the victory.

This goal marked his 15th in major international tournaments, allowing him to surpass Michel Platini as France's leading scorer in both World Cups and European Championships combined.

France's successful start was bolstered by Mbappe's latest display of brilliance, further solidifying his reputation as one of the standout players of his generation and a key figure in Les Bleus' pursuit of a third World Cup title.
