France Secures Strong Victory in World Cup Group Stage

In a commanding performance, France captain Kylian Mbappe lauded his team's composed execution following their impressive 4-1 triumph against Norway in the final Group I match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Mbappe further solidified his legacy in football by matching Miroslav Klose for the second-most goal involvements in World Cup history since 1966, totaling 20 (16 goals and 4 assists).


Only Lionel Messi, with 26 goal involvements, stands ahead of him. Although Mbappe did not score against Norway, he played a crucial role by assisting Ousmane Dembele twice, according to OptaJose.


Dembele's remarkable hat-trick propelled France to a decisive 4-1 victory in their Group I encounter in Boston on Friday.


Both teams had already secured their spots in the knockout stage after winning their first two matches. France led the group on goal difference and needed just a draw to secure the top position. However, they concluded the group stage with a resounding victory, confirming their first-place finish in Group I.


The Ballon d'Or winner opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a superb finish and doubled his tally in the 20th minute with a spectacular long-range strike. Norway quickly responded with a goal from Thelo Aasgaard in the 21st minute, narrowing the gap.


Dembele, however, restored France's lead with a powerful finish in the 32nd minute, completing his hat-trick, which marked the first first-half hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup this century. Norway had a chance to get back into the game in the second half, but striker Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a penalty, adding to their woes.


Desire Doue capped off the scoring with a brilliant header in the 94th minute, assisted by his PSG teammate Bradley Barcola. Norway finished second in Group I and will face the Ivory Coast in the round of 32 in Dallas, while France will remain on the East Coast to take on a third-place qualifier.
