Kylian Mbappe Becomes France's All-Time Leading Scorer with 58 Goals
Mbappe Achieves Historic Milestone
In New Jersey, USA, on June 18, Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French national football team, expressed immense pride after becoming the all-time leading scorer for France, receiving a special jersey marked with the number 58.
Reflecting on this achievement in a post on X, Mbappe expressed gratitude towards his teammates, coaching staff, and the French Football Federation (FFF).
He stated, "58 goals. It is a great honor to become the top scorer in the history of our national team, a country that has seen numerous great players. I thank all my teammates, the staff, and the FFF for their unwavering trust from day one. And thank you for your support. We continue our journey, as there is still much to accomplish."
A Strong Start to the World Cup
Continuing his impressive ascent in international football, Mbappe helped France kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a decisive 3-1 win over Senegal.
He scored two goals, allowing France to avenge their infamous 1-0 loss to Senegal in the 2002 World Cup, marking a strong beginning to their title defense after winning in 2018 and finishing as runners-up in 2022.
With this performance, Mbappe reached 14 goals in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing Just Fontaine's long-held national record of 13, making him France's leading scorer in the tournament.
Climbing the All-Time Scoring Charts
The Real Madrid star is now tied with German legend Gerd Muller on the all-time World Cup scoring list, with only Brazilian icon Ronaldo Nazario (15), Miroslav Klose (16), and Lionel Messi (16) ahead of him. Messi recently scored a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina's World Cup opener.
Mbappe's two goals brought his total to 58 for the national team, breaking Olivier Giroud's previous record of 57.
France took the lead shortly after the hour mark when Michael Olise delivered a perfectly timed pass to Mbappe, who finished with composure past Edouard Mendy.
Historic Moments in the Match
Substitute Bradley Barcola extended France's lead in the 79th minute with a well-placed chip, making history as the youngest French player to score on his World Cup debut since Thierry Henry in 1998.
Senegal briefly threatened a comeback with a goal from Ibrahim Mbaye, who became the youngest African scorer in World Cup history at just 18 years and 143 days.
However, Mbappe sealed the match deep into stoppage time with a stunning long-range shot into the top corner, marking his 15th goal in major international tournaments and surpassing Michel Platini as France's leading scorer in both World Cups and European Championships combined.
Looking Ahead
Mbappe's exceptional performance not only solidified his status as one of the defining players of his generation but also positioned him as a key figure in France's quest for a third World Cup title, following their near miss in 2022.
