Mbappe Defends Dembele's Role in Team

Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) [US], June 22: Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French national team, has publicly supported Ousmane Dembele as they prepare for their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match against Iraq. He dismissed the negative feedback regarding Dembele's performance against Senegal, emphasizing that the Ballon d'Or winner is crucial to Didier Deschamps' squad.

On the eve of France's second group-stage game, Mbappe commended Dembele's impact during the opening match, noting the tactical contributions that often go unnoticed.

“Regarding Ousmane, I reviewed the game twice; in the first half, he was the standout among our attacking players. In the second half, while Michael and I made decisive plays, he also played a key role by drawing defenders and creating space for our first goal. Ousmane remains composed. As a Ballon d'Or winner, he has the trust of the entire team. I am confident he will excel starting tomorrow. He is undoubtedly going to be a pivotal player for us,” Mbappe stated.

Despite France's victory over Senegal, Dembele faced criticism, but Mbappe was quick to highlight the forward's significance in the team's offensive strategy.

As he approaches his 100th international cap, the Real Madrid star reflected on the weight of leading the national team on such a grand stage. “I understand my role and the history I am part of for my country. Sometimes the pressure can be overwhelming, but having previously participated in this competition, I know that a single strong performance in the first match isn't sufficient,” Mbappe remarked.

Mbappe also praised Michael Olise, whose creativity has enhanced the French attack. “He is an outstanding player with a style that resonates with everyone. His movement adds depth to our squad, and perhaps tomorrow, we will see two other players shine. He has the talent to create unique opportunities in every match,” he added.

France is set to face Iraq on Monday, with a win ensuring their progression to the Round of 16, while a subsequent match against Norway awaits. With Mbappe spearheading the attack, Olise in fine form, and Dembele eager to prove himself, Les Bleus aim to solidify their status as one of the tournament's frontrunners.
