Kolkata Knight Riders Sign Saurabh Dubey as Replacement for Akash Deep
Kolkata Knight Riders Make a Strategic Move
The Kolkata Knight Riders, who have clinched the IPL title three times, have brought in Saurabh Dubey from Vidarbha to take the place of Akash Deep for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, as reported by Cricbuzz. Akash Deep has been sidelined due to a slow recovery from a lower-back stress injury. While Dubey has been signed as a replacement, KKR has yet to issue an official announcement regarding this change. The 28-year-old cricketer has already started his training with the Knight Riders in Kolkata.

Who Is Saurabh Dubey?
Saurabh Dubey, a left-arm medium-fast bowler, was acquired for Rs 20 lakh during the IPL 2022 auction and previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, although he did not get a chance to play in any matches. In domestic cricket, he represents Vidarbha, where he has taken 16 wickets across eight first-class games, in addition to participating in eight List A matches and three T20 games. Despite entering the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, he went unsold.
Dubey also had the honor of representing India in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup held in Bangladesh, where he made a significant impact by taking 4 wickets for 26 runs in his List A debut against Nepal, earning the Player of the Match award. By the end of the tournament, he had claimed seven wickets over three matches.
This signing is noteworthy as KKR has opted for a bowler who has consistently impressed in domestic cricket, rather than merely filling a gap. Subroto Banerjee, who has closely monitored Dubey's progress in Nagpur and serves as a national selector, expressed strong support for this decision. “He is a very talented left-arm fast bowler. I remember him touring Bangladesh under Rahul Dravid as part of the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup squad. He gets extra bounce off the wicket and can swing the ball both ways. It's a good call by the Knight Riders management,” Banerjee stated.
In T20 cricket, left-arm seamers are highly valued for their ability to disrupt batting strategies that right-arm bowlers often cannot, offering varied angles and match-up opportunities. Banerjee's comments about Dubey's bounce and agility are particularly relevant, as KKR hopes he will contribute beyond just being a temporary replacement for an injured player.
The timing of this transition is crucial for KKR, as they are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Mumbai Indians on March 29. With injuries already prompting changes, Dubey now finds himself with an unexpected chance to join a team that has a pressing need for his skills.
