KKR's IPL 2026 Campaign Begins

The Kolkata Knight Riders are gearing up to kick off their IPL 2026 journey against the Mumbai Indians on March 29 (Sunday). Despite making significant changes to their roster prior to the auction, KKR is currently facing a series of injury challenges. They made headlines by acquiring Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana for a staggering ₹18 crore to strengthen their bowling lineup. Unfortunately, he will miss the opening match due to an injury, and there is no definitive timeline for his return.

Pathirana sustained his injury during the T20 World Cup 2026, and while he is expected to join KKR around mid-April, he still requires fitness clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). In a press briefing ahead of the match against MI, KKR's assistant coach Shane Watson provided an update, stating that the team is in close communication with SLC and is currently in a holding pattern regarding Pathirana's status.

“With Pathirana, it’s a waiting game at the moment. We’re being guided by Sri Lanka Cricket, and we’re doing everything possible to have him here as soon as we can. Given the quality of our support and medical staff at KKR, we share the same goal as Sri Lanka Cricket: to have Pathirana fit and ready. We would never rush him back before he is ready,” Watson explained.

Prioritizing Pathirana's Health

Watson further stressed that KKR is committed to ensuring Matheesha Pathirana's long-term fitness rather than risking his health for the season opener. As a key signing worth ₹18 crore, the franchise is taking a cautious approach.

“Our priority is not to have him play in the first game if it means he might return too soon and risk further injury. We hope he can join us soon so we can begin integrating him into the team. Pathirana was one of our top targets during the auction, and we are eager to have him on board,” Watson added.
