Inquiry into Messi's Postponed Visit to Keralam

Thiruvananthapuram (Keralam) [India], August 13: The Chief Minister of Keralam, VD Satheesan, has raised questions regarding the previous administration's handling of football superstar Lionel Messi's planned visit to the state last year. He is particularly interested in understanding the process that allowed a private entity to form an agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for this tour.

Messi's anticipated trip to Keralam for a friendly match was postponed, as announced by the sponsors last year. According to reports from Olympics.com, Argentina was set to face the Australian men's football team at Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium on November 17, following a venue inspection by the AFA in September.

This visit was part of Argentina's provisional schedule for friendly matches during the FIFA International Window in November. However, the sponsors cited delays in obtaining FIFA's approval, indicating that the match would be rescheduled for a later international window. Despite Messi's recent tour of India, which included stops in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, there remains uncertainty about a future visit to Keralam.

During a press conference, Satheesan mentioned that the Sports Department has submitted a report on the situation, which is currently under review. He emphasized that the previous government, led by the Left Democratic Front and CM Pinarayi Vijayan, cannot evade responsibility regarding this issue.

"This matter is surrounded by significant controversy. I have received a report from the Sports Department that contains serious allegations, and it is now under government scrutiny. The government cannot simply distance itself from this situation," he stated.

Satheesan further questioned the procedures followed in allowing a private company to negotiate with the AFA for Messi's visit, asking whether an Expression of Interest was sought and if the company's financial capabilities were assessed. "These are critical issues that require thorough investigation," he added.

He noted that several conflicting statements have surfaced, and they are currently being investigated. Satheesan clarified that he has not taken any action against any institution based solely on the complaint received, stating, "I am merely reviewing the complaint. It is incorrect to suggest that I am attempting to suppress any institution," he concluded.
