Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 28: The Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to para-athlete Shilpa K Shyla for securing a bronze medal in the women's F57 shot put event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

In a message shared on his official X account, the Chief Minister hailed Shilpa's accomplishment as a moment of pride for both Karnataka and the entire nation.

“Warmest congratulations to Shilpa K. Shyla from Karnataka for clinching the Bronze Medal in the Women’s F57 Shot Put at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Initially finishing fourth with a personal best throw of 7.26 meters, Shilpa ascended to the podium after the disqualification of Nigerian athlete Iyiazi, as reported by ESPN. The updated results confirmed that fellow Indian Sharmila Dhankar maintained her gold medal position with a season-best throw of 9.81m, while Ghana's Zinabu Issah secured the silver with a throw of 8.65m.

This medal represents a significant milestone in Shilpa's journey, which has been marked by resilience and determination. Hailing from Kanchigara Koppalu village in Mysuru district, Shilpa lost her left leg at the tender age of four due to a tragic accident involving a speeding truck.

Despite this life-changing event, she pursued her education, earning a postgraduate degree and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), and initially worked as a school teacher before transitioning to para-athletics.

Her personal best throw of 7.26m in Glasgow initially placed her just outside the medal standings, but the official review and subsequent disqualification of the Nigerian athlete allowed her to rightfully claim the bronze, marking India's first double podium finish in a single event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The women's shot put F57 event was dominated by Sharmila Dhankar, who continued her impressive performance by winning gold with a season-best throw of 9.81m. The 40-year-old para-athlete from Haryana delivered a remarkable performance, while Issah took home the silver for Ghana.
