Pekerman Reflects on Messi's Legacy

Buenos Aires, Argentina - On July 7, former Argentina head coach Jose Pekerman, who oversaw Lionel Messi's debut in the FIFA World Cup back in 2006, expressed admiration for the iconic player. He highlighted Messi's extraordinary achievements while maintaining his integrity as a person.

Argentina is set to face Egypt in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup on July 7 at 9:30 PM IST, continuing their quest for glory.

Throughout the tournament, Messi has shattered numerous records, including becoming the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 20 goals. He also made history as the first player to score in eight consecutive World Cup matches and holds the record for the most assists in World Cup history. His journey began with a memorable hat-trick against Algeria.

Pekerman was the one who introduced a young Messi, then just 18, into the World Cup match against Serbia and Montenegro when Argentina was leading 4-0. Shortly after, Messi scored, making him the youngest Argentine to net a goal in World Cup history. Since that moment, Messi has achieved remarkable success, marking a truly inspiring journey characterized by longevity and consistency.

Reflecting on Messi's debut, Pekerman shared with a news outlet that he had no doubts about Messi's potential to become one of the best players in the world.

“Every minute was significant for me because I was confident that in the following decade, he would be competing to be among the world's elite,” he remarked.

Pekerman emphasized the importance of Messi adapting to a more professional and demanding level of football, allowing his talent to flourish alongside his experience.

Now at 39, Messi stands as the oldest goal-scorer for Argentina. Pekerman, now 76, described Messi's journey as a beautiful narrative that he deeply appreciates. “It was clear he was destined for greatness. We can't claim to have discovered him; his talent was evident,” he stated.

He also drew parallels between Messi's game intelligence and that of the late Diego Maradona, noting that both players exhibited remarkable understanding of the game from a young age.

“It was akin to what we witnessed with Maradona. Their intelligence transcended their youth, allowing them to grasp soccer intricacies and navigate various situations,” he explained.

In addition to his records and accolades, Messi is celebrated as one of football's most humble figures. Pekerman referred to him as a “true role model.”

“The records he is setting will be incredibly challenging to surpass. Maintaining such a high level for an extended period while continuously setting new goals is no small feat. He has accomplished this without losing his essence as a person. I believe the choices he has made throughout his career have consistently been the right ones,” Pekerman concluded.
