Joao Neves Makes History as Youngest Portuguese Scorer in World Cup Match
Neves Shines in World Cup Debut
In Texas, USA, on June 18, Joao Neves made headlines by becoming the third-youngest Portuguese player to score in FIFA World Cup history during a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in the 2026 tournament.
At just 21 years and 263 days old, Neves scored in Portugal's first group-stage match, continuing the legacy of young Portuguese players excelling on football's grandest stage.
He now ranks behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored at 21 years and 132 days during the 2006 World Cup, and Goncalo Ramos, who netted at 21 years and 169 days in 2022.
Neves opened the scoring for Portugal in the sixth minute, heading in a precise cross from Pedro Neto to mark his fourth goal for the national team.
Despite Neves' early goal, Portugal faced disappointment as they were held to a 1-1 draw by the underdog DR Congo, with Yoane Wissa equalizing shortly after.
Cristiano Ronaldo, participating in his sixth World Cup, struggled to make an impact, while Bernardo Silva also had a challenging game, as the team failed to live up to their favorites' status.
After the initial goal, Portugal seemed to lose their rhythm, passing the ball without urgency and creating few opportunities, while DR Congo posed a threat on counterattacks.
Their efforts paid off in first-half stoppage time when Wissa scored with a header from Arthur Masuaku's cross, leveling the match.
Portugal thought they had regained the lead early in the second half with an acrobatic goal from Joao Cancelo, but it was disallowed for offside. DR Congo nearly took the lead when Cedric Bakambu hit the post after overpowering Bruno Fernandes.
Late in the game, substitute Francisco Conceicao injected some energy into the Portuguese attack, creating chances for Ronaldo, but the veteran forward could not find the net as Portugal struggled to score.
Despite pressing for a late winner, Portugal was unable to secure victory, allowing DR Congo to earn a historic point in their first World Cup appearance since 1974.
