Jhye Richardson Aims for Test Comeback Amid Injury Challenges

Richardson's Focus on Test Cricket

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On September 20, Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson expressed his determination to return to Test cricket as he gears up for two unofficial four-day matches against India A in Puducherry. He has set his sights on next year's Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Richardson stated, "The goal has always been to play Test cricket," during a Big Bash League event in Chennai, as reported by a sports media outlet.

He added, "I would love to participate in Test matches. I've had a few opportunities, but due to shoulder problems and other injuries, my appearances have been limited."

He emphasized, "The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is always on my mind. My current focus is on being present in Chennai and then in Puducherry for the upcoming matches against India A. If I perform well, I hope to earn my place back in Test cricket."

Turning 30 and Staying Motivated

Richardson will celebrate his 30th birthday on Sunday, just two days before the first unofficial Test against India A. Despite facing a career marred by injuries and the recent loss of his central contract with Australia, he remains motivated.

He remarked, "Turning 30 is a bit daunting, knowing that careers can end unexpectedly. However, I still feel strong and enjoy playing for my country. Whether I'm a senior bowler or a junior one doesn't matter as long as I'm enjoying my cricket."

International Experience and Future Aspirations

Since his international debut in 2017, Richardson has participated in four Tests and 33 white-ball matches. His last Test appearance was against England at the MCG in December 2025, where he notably dismissed Joe Root with an inswinger.

He shared that he enjoyed his time with Root during his first county stint with Yorkshire, saying, "Joe is fantastic off the field. He’s one of the best players globally, and our conversations often extend beyond cricket. He’s very thoughtful about what he says."

Performance and Training Updates

Richardson's county performance was modest, with six wickets in seven innings at an average of 66.33. However, he was pleased to have remained injury-free throughout the county season and the Global Super League in Guyana.

He noted, "In recent years, injuries have prevented me from playing consistently. My aim was to finish the season strong and transition into county cricket, followed by the GSL, which I’ve managed to do successfully."

Coaching Changes and Future Prospects

Richardson credited the changes in the Western Australia setup, including the new head coach Beau Casson and a new strength and conditioning coach, for helping him through rigorous training.

Earlier this month, Australia’s chair of selectors George Bailey raised questions about Richardson's ability to bowl at speeds of 140kph and above, but clarified that this would not exclude him from international selection.

Adam Voges, coach of Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers, remarked that Richardson appears fitter and stronger than ever, stating, "I’m excited and optimistic for Jhye this season. He’s faced injury challenges, but he looks as fit and strong as I’ve seen him, which bodes well for his opportunities."

Looking Forward to BBL Season

Richardson is eager to engage with Indian fans when the Perth Scorchers face the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL season opener in Chennai on December 12, marking the first BBL match held outside Australia.

He concluded, "India has a deep love for cricket. The stadiums are always filled and incredibly loud, so we hope to create a similar atmosphere here. We might need to rally some support in Chennai for the Scorchers."
