Jemimah Rodrigues Faces Setback with Hamstring Injury

New Delhi, August 14: Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues will not participate in the upcoming Women's Asia Cup and the Asian Games after suffering a significant right hamstring tear during her stint in England's franchise cricket tournament, The Hundred, as confirmed by the BCCI on Friday.

The injury occurred on August 3 while she was playing for Southern Brave in The Hundred. Following the incident, Rodrigues was evaluated by the BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where the severity of her injury was determined.

At just 25 years old, Rodrigues will miss crucial matches for India in both the Women's Asia Cup in the UAE and the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which is a significant setback for the team's preparations for these important T20 events.

In her absence, the Women's Selection Committee has appointed Pratika Rawal as her replacement for the Asia Cup. Rawal is making a return to the national team after recently playing for India A.

The Women's Asia Cup is set to commence on August 28 in Dubai, with India kicking off their campaign against Thailand on August 30. India is placed in Group A, alongside Thailand, Pakistan, and Hong Kong, while Group B includes Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Indonesia.

This tournament will follow the T20 format, culminating in the final scheduled for September 13.

Rodrigues' absence will also impact India's title defense at the Asian Games, where they aim to retain the women's cricket gold medal won in Hangzhou 2023. The cricket events at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will take place in T20 format from September 17 to October 3.

India secured the women's gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.

The BCCI has not yet announced a specific timeline for Rodrigues' recovery, as she will begin rehabilitation for her hamstring injury.

India's revised squad for the Asia Cup includes: Harmanpreet Kaur (captain), Smriti Mandhana (vice-captain), Shafali Verma, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (wicketkeeper), G Kamalini (wicketkeeper), Arundhati Reddy, Prema Rawat, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Renuka Thakur, Nandni Sharma, Kranti Gaud, and Pratika Rawal.
