Jason Gillespie Critiques Kevin Pietersen's Comments on Alastair Cook
Controversy in Cricket: Gillespie vs. Pietersen
Jason Gillespie, the coach of the Hyderabad Kingsmen in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and a former Australian cricketer, has expressed his discontent with Kevin Pietersen's criticism of Alastair Cook. Pietersen had previously criticized Cook for his remarks regarding Jacob Bethell's decision to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bengaluru instead of playing county cricket. Gillespie, who briefly served as the head coach for the Pakistan national team, defended Cook's perspective, stating that Pietersen's comments were unwarranted. Pietersen took to X to assert that Cook, who has never experienced the IPL, lacks understanding of its benefits for a player's career. He stated, "Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it's like to be in the IPL. What's it's like to always be around the best players in the world. So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn't matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you're not playing, you're learning and will be a way better player." Cook's remarks came when Bethell was not participating in matches, emphasizing the need for him to gain experience ahead of the Test season. Following an injury to Phil Salt, Bethell eventually got the chance to play, participating in seven matches during the IPL season but only managing to score 96 runs. Recently, it was reported that the 22-year-old has been ruled out of the tournament due to a finger injury and has returned to England, raising doubts about his availability for the first Test against New Zealand starting June 4th.
Gillespie Stands Up for Cook
In response to Pietersen's comments, Gillespie defended Cook, asserting that the former England captain's opinion was indeed valid. He criticized Pietersen's harsh response, stating, “I think Sir Alastair Cook had a valid point, but the way KP absolutely hammered him for having an opinion — give me a spell, boys. Absolute nonsense. He reckons he would have played 150 Tests or more. He’s the one who paved the way. Thank you, Kevin, for the stars above, the sun, the moon, the earth we walk on and the air we breathe. It was all about cash for you, Kev. Give me a break, you muppet.” Gillespie has successfully led Hyderabad to their first PSL final in their inaugural season, although they were defeated by Peshawar Zalmi. He served as the head coach of Pakistan's Test team for seven months from April to December 2024 before his departure from the role.
