London [UK], March 18: England's wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith views his absence from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as a chance to enhance his red-ball skills following a tough Ashes series.

After a challenging 4-1 defeat in Australia, Smith expressed that while he initially desired the experience of franchise cricket, he now sees the extended break as an opportunity to concentrate on technical growth ahead of the home Test season.

"At that moment, I would have loved to participate in the IPL," Smith stated during Surrey's pre-season media day, as reported by a sports news outlet.

"I aim to improve all aspects of my game, and I believe the IPL could significantly benefit my white-ball performance, which in turn could enhance my red-ball game as well."

However, reflecting on the situation, he appreciates the chance to focus on red-ball cricket. "I felt a bit out of sync technically towards the end of the summer and into the winter," he added.

Back at Surrey's Kia Oval, Smith has been diligently refining his skills, aiming to apply these improvements in the County Championship. "It's been great to work on a few things here, and I hope to implement them over the next six or seven games," he mentioned.

Despite his modest performance during the Ashes, Smith's place in England's Test squad is not guaranteed, with rising competition from players like Jordan Cox and James Rew. Nevertheless, his impressive record, including a notable unbeaten 184 against India last summer, highlights his potential.

Reflecting on his recent experiences, Smith noted the intense physical and mental challenges of international cricket. "The series against India was incredibly demanding. It was my first five-Test series, and we spent 22 out of 25 days in the field, with all Tests lasting five days. By the end, I was completely exhausted both physically and mentally," he explained.

"The key takeaway is maintaining high standards from the first game to the last."

Despite facing criticism for his wicketkeeping during the Ashes, Smith remains optimistic. "Mistakes are part of the game," he acknowledged, confident that he can improve through experience and ongoing practice.

Looking back on the Australia tour, Smith recognized his own areas for improvement but also emphasized the caliber of the opposition. "It was challenging. I had high hopes, but it didn't go as planned. I didn't perform as well as I wished," he reflected. "However, it's important to remember that you're competing against a world-class team, which can sometimes be overlooked."

Now rejuvenated and focused, Smith is eager to capitalize on this fresh start. "It's a valuable learning experience," he concluded. "I'm entering the season with a fresh mindset, and I truly enjoy being back at Surrey and playing here."
