James Milner Retires After Two Decades of Football Excellence
James Milner Bids Farewell to Football
New Delhi [India], June 1: James Milner, the former vice-captain of Liverpool, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, concluding a remarkable career that spanned over 20 years.
Milner, who holds the record for the most appearances in the Premier League, spent eight successful seasons with Liverpool after joining the club on a free transfer in 2015. During his time at Anfield, he played in 332 matches across all competitions, scoring 26 goals and providing 45 assists.
Recognized for his professionalism and skill, Milner won numerous titles with Liverpool, including the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Emirates FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, as highlighted on the club's official website.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the 40-year-old expressed, "After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career."
Reflecting on his journey, he recalled making his debut for Leeds United at just 16 years old, becoming the youngest scorer in Premier League history. He noted, "I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on, right through to not being able to lift my foot last year and then coming back to be part of Brighton & Hove Albion qualifying for Europe for the second time in their history at the age of 40."
Milner also acknowledged the significant roles played by various clubs throughout his career, including Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and a brief stint at Swindon Town. He expressed gratitude to the owners, staff, coaches, teammates, and fans who supported him along the way.
Upon joining Liverpool, Milner quickly became the team's deputy captain, working under managers Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, both of whom valued his leadership and skills.
Milner was instrumental in Klopp's squad, particularly during the 2016-17 season when he filled in at left-back, helping the team secure a Champions League spot with a fourth-place finish.
He played a crucial role in Liverpool's journey to the Champions League final in 2018, although they faced defeat against Real Madrid in Kyiv. However, the following year, Milner and his teammates triumphed, securing the club's sixth European Cup by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid, following a remarkable 97-point Premier League season.
Milner's accolades continued with the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, and he played a vital part in the 2019-20 Premier League season, which ended Liverpool's 30-year wait for a top-flight title.
He celebrated two more trophies during his final season with Liverpool, contributing to a cup double in the pursuit of a quadruple in 2021-22.
Milner received a warm farewell from fans at Anfield in May 2023 and returned with Brighton in December of the same year.
In his last season with the Seagulls, he made history by surpassing Gareth Barry's record of 653 appearances, becoming the all-time leader in Premier League matches played.
Milner concluded, "I’ve been fortunate enough to experience unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing England at two European Championships and two World Cups. But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever."
He expressed his gratitude to fans, stating, "To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you’ll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too – you all played your part in making the journey memorable and helping shape me as a player and person. To my family, thank you for every sacrifice, every mile travelled and every moment of encouragement. None of this would have been possible without you."
Milner finished with a heartfelt message, saying, "I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude, and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey."
