Jai Moondra Shines on Debut as Ireland Secures Historic Win Against India
Jai Moondra's Remarkable Debut
After dedicating five years to his cricketing journey in Ireland, Jai Moondra made a stunning entry into international cricket, facing India in the first T20I of a two-match series held in Belfast. The left-arm fast bowler marked his debut with an unforgettable moment, claiming the wicket of Sanju Samson with his very first delivery. He also took down Shivam Dube, a key player who posed a significant threat to India's chances of winning. Moondra's performance contributed to a historic victory for Ireland, marking their first-ever win against India. Reflecting on this achievement, Moondra expressed that this moment would remain etched in his memory forever. "At the top of my mark, I was just trying to calm the noise down and trust my rhythm. Once I ran in, it was all instinct, and to take a wicket with my first ball was an unreal feeling. Now, to have been part of Ireland’s first-ever win over India makes it even more special, it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It’s a proud moment for the team, and for Irish cricket," the 29-year-old shared with the media. Moondra relocated to Ireland for his studies in 2021, where he continued to play local cricket before finally joining the national team in 2026. Ironically, he debuted against the nation of his birth.
India Faces Pressure in Upcoming Match
Must-win game for India
The second T20I is crucial for the Indian team, as a loss would result in their first T20I bilateral series defeat since 2023. Previously, India faced a setback in their T20I series against the West Indies under Hardik Pandya's leadership. The reigning T20 World Cup Champions had not lost a bilateral series during Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy. Following his removal from the captaincy and exclusion from the squad before the Ireland series, Shreyas Iyer, who last played a T20I in December 2023, took over the captaincy. Unfortunately, Iyer's first match in charge ended in defeat. The second T20I is scheduled for Sunday (June 28), but India was unable to practice the day before due to a wet outfield.
