Exciting Debut for Jai Moondra

As anticipation builds for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut, another intriguing story unfolds with pacer Jai Moondra poised to earn his first international cap during the upcoming T20I series between India and Ireland. This series will mark a significant moment for Moondra, who is set to compete against the nation of his birth. The two teams are scheduled to clash in two T20 matches on June 26 and June 28 at The Stormont in Belfast. The 29-year-old has received his first call-up to the Ireland squad for this two-match series, which will be the inaugural assignment for the European team under new captain Loran Tucker, following injuries to key pacers Josh Little, Mark Adair, and Barry McCarthy.

Background of Jai Moondra

Jai Moondra hails from Tonk, a city in Rajasthan, India, located just 95 kilometers from Jaipur. He began his cricket journey at a young age, initially as a top-order batsman who bowled spin until he transitioned to fast bowling at 16. In 2021, he moved to Ireland to pursue a master's degree in electronics and communication. After opting not to take a corporate job, he decided to reignite his cricket career. Moondra shared, “I prioritized my studies and stepped back from cricket, playing casually for enjoyment. In college, I started bowling medium pace with a tennis ball, which eventually led me to play with a leather ball for my college team. I began to gain pace, which reignited my passion for fast bowling. After college in 2019, I felt my cricket journey might end if I took a full-time job, so I decided to give cricket one last shot and quit my job.”

Upon settling in Ireland, Moondra joined the Leinster Cricket Club in Dublin, where he played a crucial role in their victory in the Irish Senior Cup in 2023. He has participated in one first-class match, six List A games, and five T20Is, claiming 11 and 10 wickets respectively. Additionally, he showcased his batting skills by scoring a half-century in his first-class debut.

As a left-arm pacer, Moondra emphasizes his unique bowling angle as a key strength. He stated, “With the new ball, I aim to utilize swing, target the pads and stumps, and create opportunities for edges. My goal is to remain unpredictable, apply pressure on the batter, and induce mistakes to secure early wickets. Throughout the innings, I like to vary my pace and incorporate slower balls and cutters. I view every delivery as a chance to dismantle partnerships. With the bat, I adapt to the situation, whether it requires aggression or a more patient approach. Flexibility is essential.”

Moondra expressed his gratitude to Cricket Ireland for this opportunity and shared his excitement about facing the world champions. “Playing international cricket has always been a dream. I’m thankful to Cricket Ireland for this chance. While I set personal goals, I focus on each match. I have targets but try not to stress about the future. I aim to enjoy the moment, especially in the series against India. Competing against such a prestigious team is a tremendous challenge, and performing well would be incredibly special,” he concluded.
