Ivory Coast's Historic World Cup Journey Ends in Heartbreak Against Norway
A Painful Exit for Ivory Coast
In Texas, on July 1, the head coach of Ivory Coast, Emerse Fae, expressed a mix of pride and disappointment after his team's narrow 2-1 loss to Norway, which ended their remarkable World Cup journey with a devastating blow in the 86th minute.
This match was a significant milestone for Ivorian football, marking their first-ever appearance in a World Cup knockout stage. Despite a valiant effort to equalize, a late defensive error allowed Norway's Erling Haaland to secure the win, leaving the Ivorians with little time to respond.
Fae shared his feelings in a post-match press conference, stating, "It's tough to lose in the dying moments. It's hard to articulate my thoughts because my players fought valiantly from start to finish."
Having previously led the Ivorians to a stunning victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in early 2024, Fae recognized that competing on the world stage presents a significantly steeper learning curve.
Reflecting on the match's final moments after Amad Diallo's impressive equalizer in the 74th minute, Fae pointed out that their lack of tournament experience ultimately hindered them against a highly efficient opponent.
"We have gained valuable lessons from this competition. For many players, this was their first World Cup, and perhaps we lacked the maturity needed," Fae remarked.
For most of the Ivorian squad, the 2026 tournament was their initial experience of World Cup football. Fae acknowledged that the team may not have possessed the tactical maturity necessary to navigate the closing stages of such a high-stakes match.
Instead of pushing aggressively in the last ten minutes, Fae suggested that a more experienced team would have focused on managing the game to secure extra time. "Perhaps we should have aimed to reach extra time," he reflected. "But against a team like this, they capitalize on every opportunity, and that’s exactly what happened today."
Although the tournament concludes in disappointment for the Elephants, the future appears promising for Fae's youthful squad, who captivated global audiences with their dynamic and fearless style during the group stages and the Round of 32.
As the Ivorians return home to reflect on their experiences in Texas, Norway moves forward to the Round of 16, where they will face the formidable Brazil in an eagerly awaited matchup.
