Italy Moves Closer to FIFA World Cup Qualification with Victory Over Northern Ireland
Italy's Path to World Cup Glory
Italy is on the verge of ending a 12-year hiatus from the FIFA World Cup, inching closer to a spot in the prestigious tournament set to take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. This follows their decisive 2-0 victory against Northern Ireland in the qualification playoff semifinal held on March 26. Goals from Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean in the second half kept the hopes of the four-time world champions alive for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The first breakthrough occurred in the 56th minute when Tonali seized an opportunity from a cleared cross, allowing the ball to bounce once before sending it into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. This goal significantly boosted the morale of Gennaro Gattuso’s squad, who have faced World Cup disappointments in recent years.
Kean sealed the comfortable win in the 80th minute, receiving a pass from Tonali, evading his defender, and skillfully placing the ball low into the net. His goal underscored Italy’s dominance throughout the match.
Now, the Azzurri are just one victory away from securing their place in the tournament. On March 31, Italy will compete against the winner of the Wales versus Bosnia and Herzegovina match for a chance to qualify for the World Cup.
Italy has been under constant pressure, having missed out on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. In 2017, they faced a 0-1 aggregate playoff defeat against Sweden, and in 2022, a semifinal loss to North Macedonia prematurely ended their campaign.
Against Northern Ireland, Italy began with determination, setting a high tempo from the start. Federico Dimarco tested Northern Ireland's goalkeeper Pierce Charles with a low volley, and Kean followed up, but the rebound went wide. The home team controlled possession in the first half, yet missed several opportunities as Kean and Mateo Retegui shot off target, leaving the score tied at halftime.
The second half unfolded differently. Tonali’s goal invigorated the team, and Kean nearly scored with an acrobatic overhead kick from a Nicolo Barella cross before finding the net moments later. Northern Ireland attempted to rally late in the game, but Italy's defense remained resolute, extinguishing the visitors’ hopes of reaching their first World Cup since 1986.
This victory has set the stage for a crucial showdown. With pressure, expectations, and history all converging, the Azzurri now stand just one step away from reclaiming their position on football’s grandest stage.
