India Dominates Sri Lanka in Semifinal Match

Ishan Kishan's impressive 80 runs off 46 balls played a crucial role in India's commanding 124-run victory against Sri Lanka during the men's cricket semifinal at the Asian Games on Thursday. This win sets the stage for a gold medal match against their long-time rivals, Pakistan.

Kishan, alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 38 runs off 21 balls, helped India reach a total of 169 for seven on a challenging pitch after Sri Lanka opted to field first.

In their pursuit of 170 runs, Sri Lanka faced a disastrous start, collapsing to 31 for six within the powerplay and ultimately being bowled out for just 45 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah made an early impact by taking two wickets in his first over, while Axar Patel also contributed with two wickets of his own.

Sri Lanka's batting collapse was exacerbated by two run-outs, highlighting their struggles against the pitch conditions and early wickets.

The unpredictable nature of the pitch caused significant issues for the batters, leading to India's swift victory in just 9.5 overs. Sri Lanka will now compete for the bronze medal against Bangladesh, who lost to Pakistan earlier.

The bronze medal match and the final are scheduled for Saturday.

As anticipation builds for the India-Pakistan final, discussions are rife regarding whether players from both teams will engage in a handshake.

Since last year's Operation Sindoor, Indian players have refrained from greeting their Pakistani counterparts during Asia Cup and ICC events as a gesture of support for the Indian armed forces.

It remains uncertain whether the current management will maintain this stance or allow for a handshake post-match, a practice observed by athletes from other sports at the Asian Games.

Regardless of the outcome, both Indian and Pakistani players will share the podium, similar to the women's team that secured gold last week.

In the match against Sri Lanka, India opted to include Sooryavanshi in the lineup for this knockout game, along with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, adapting to the spin-friendly conditions.

They excluded left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, leaving Bumrah as their sole fast bowling option.

Sri Lanka employed a similar strategy, attempting to outmaneuver the Indian batters with spin after choosing to bowl first, which proved somewhat effective.

Without the standout performances from Sooryavanshi and Kishan, India might have ended up with a significantly lower score.

The weather was pleasantly sunny as both teams took the field for the first time in the tournament.

With the ball turning considerably during the powerplay, it was evident that spinners would play a pivotal role in the match.

Sri Lanka utilized only two overs of pace bowling.

Abhishek Sharma (7 off 3) fell after hitting a straight six off Sri Lanka's captain, Sahan Arachchige, but then offered a catch at short third man.

Samson (7 off 9) was deceived by a straight delivery from ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Ratnayake, who switched between left-arm and off-spin.

Despite losing wickets, Sooryavanshi maintained pressure on the opposition with his dynamic batting style.

After three overs of spin, left-arm pacer Binura Fernando was introduced, but Sooryavanshi quickly asserted dominance by hitting him for two consecutive boundaries.

In Tharindu's third over, Sooryavanshi executed a reverse sweep and followed it up with a six over long-on.

His most impressive shot came from a pull off Fernando, bringing India's score to 58 for two in the first six overs.

The 15-year-old prodigy was dismissed shortly after, caught at short third man off Arachchige, mirroring Abhishek's dismissal.

The fall of captain Shreyas Iyer (13) and Axar Patel (8) during the middle overs slowed India's scoring rate until Kishan unleashed a barrage of runs against the spinners.

He focused on hitting straight rather than attempting risky horizontal shots, with four of his sixes landing between long-on and long-off, complemented by four boundaries.
