Kishan Stresses Individual Focus in Cricket

In Harare, Zimbabwe, on July 26, India's wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan shared insights on the significance of concentrating on his own performance rather than getting distracted by external factors or comparisons with teammates.

He pointed out that a No. 3 batter must evaluate the match context, gauge the pitch conditions, and adjust their strategy accordingly.

"I try not to dwell on external happenings. I am aware of how I need to play. The key is to remain present and not get caught up in outside distractions, such as who is scoring more runs. Everyone in the team can have their moments. However, as a No. 3 batter, if the team loses two wickets early, it’s crucial to recognize the situation. Should you take risks or focus on building a partnership? Understanding the pitch is essential for making the right decisions," Kishan explained.

When India opted to bat first, Kishan came to the crease early after the team found themselves at 29/2 within the first three overs.

The left-handed batsman played a pivotal role in stabilizing the innings, forming a 66-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer (25) and later adding a crucial 94-run partnership with Tilak Varma, helping India reach a solid total of 219/5 in 20 overs.

Kishan led the batting charge with an explosive 81 runs off just 44 deliveries, featuring nine fours and two sixes.

He noted that the team carefully evaluated the pitch and prioritized building partnerships over merely aiming for a specific score. Kishan and Iyer's strategy was to bat deep after the early setbacks, which they executed effectively.

"We had various thoughts about whether to aim for 250 or 230 runs, or if the pitch would only support a total of 170 to 180 runs. When Shreyas Iyer joined me, we decided to focus on forming a partnership and extending the innings. I believe we carried out this plan very well," Kishan added.

India's bowlers complemented the batting performance with a disciplined display, led by Abhishek Sharma's impressive three-wicket haul, while Yash Thakur and Prince Yadav each took two wickets.

Zimbabwe was dismissed for 129 runs in just 17.5 overs, resulting in a commanding 90-run victory for India and securing an unassailable lead in the three-match series.
