Iran's Strong Response to U.S. Comments

Tehran, July 1 – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has expressed strong disapproval of U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin's remarks regarding Iran's exit from the United States following the World Cup.

Araghchi accused Mullin of damaging the essence of international sports, asserting that such behavior indicates the U.S. is unqualified to host a global event.

In a post on X, he stated, "Mission Accomplished, Mr. Mullin. You have also achieved something else: demonstrating to the world that you are unfit to host an international tournament. Your actions have showcased how to waste the dignity associated with being a host."

These comments followed Mullin's statement expressing satisfaction over Iran's departure, where he mentioned celebrating the revocation of their visas and their exit from the U.S.

"I’m just relieved they’re gone and won’t be returning. I was thrilled when we managed to revoke their visas and let them leave U.S. soil. I might have even sung a song or danced a little," Mullin reportedly said, according to ESPN.

Iran's involvement in the FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, occurred amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions with the United States and Israel.

Prior to the tournament, Iran relocated their World Cup base camp from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, due to uncertainties regarding travel and entry into the U.S.

During the FIFA World Cup 2026, Iran drew all three of their group-stage matches but was eliminated, finishing third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, thus failing to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
