Iranian Fans Showcase Pre-Revolutionary Flag at World Cup Despite FIFA Ban
Iranian Supporters Make a Statement at the World Cup
In Los Angeles, on June 16, Iranian fans at the World Cup made headlines by openly displaying the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag, defying FIFA's prohibition on such symbols at the event.
As Iran prepared to face New Zealand in their opening match, a significant number of demonstrators gathered outside SoFi Stadium to voice their dissent against the Iranian regime, according to reports from a media outlet.
Inside the stadium, the pre-revolutionary flag was prominently featured among the crowd, with supporters showcasing it on various items like banners, flags, and T-shirts, despite FIFA's explicit ruling against such displays.
FIFA had previously stated that showing the pre-revolutionary flag contravened their code of conduct, which prohibits any political, offensive, or discriminatory materials at tournament venues, as outlined in regulations released in May.
Security measures at SoFi Stadium were notably strict, requiring fans to undergo metal detector screenings and bag checks before entry.
When a group of fans wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the pre-revolutionary flag was approached by security, they were asked to remove the shirts. However, when they indicated they had no other clothing, they were told to turn the shirts inside out.
Despite these precautions, the enforcement of the ban seemed lax once fans were inside, as the pre-revolutionary flag continued to be displayed widely throughout the stands on various items during the match.
Additionally, some Iranian supporters chose to turn their backs during the national anthem, further demonstrating their protest.
