IPL 2027 May Start Earlier to Avoid Rain Delays

The BCCI is exploring the possibility of starting IPL 2027 two weeks earlier to mitigate weather-related disruptions. With the tournament traditionally commencing in late March, this change aims to enhance the experience for players and fans alike. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will enter the season as defending champions after their victory in IPL 2026. This article delves into the reasons behind the proposed schedule adjustment and highlights RCB's recent achievements.

IPL 2027 Schedule Changes Under Consideration

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating an earlier start for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2027, potentially moving the tournament up by two weeks. Traditionally, the IPL kicks off in the last week of March and concludes in late May. For instance, IPL 2027 is scheduled to commence on March 28 and wrap up with the final on May 31. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia shared insights on this potential adjustment, citing concerns about weather conditions towards the end of the tournament.

Saikia explained, "This year, IPL began around March 29 and concluded by May 31. We are currently discussing the possibility of starting the tournament earlier, as the period after May 15 often brings rain and the onset of the pre-monsoon season. Additionally, the hot weather during this time can be challenging for both players and fans. Therefore, we are exploring options to initiate the tournament a bit earlier than the end of March." He further mentioned that efforts will be made to start by March 10 and finish by May 15 to avoid adverse weather during the playoffs and finals of IPL 2027, marking its 20th edition.

Since the introduction of two new teams in 2022, the number of matches in the IPL has risen, with the league stage now featuring 70 matches, culminating in a total of 74 matches for the season.

RCB to Defend Title in IPL 2027

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will enter the IPL 2027 season as the reigning champions. Led by Rajat Patidar, RCB triumphed over Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2026 final, successfully defending their title. Virat Kohli played a pivotal role in the final, scoring an impressive 75 runs off 42 balls, helping RCB chase down a target of 156 runs in just 18 overs. Other teams that have successfully defended their titles include Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). RCB ended their title drought in 2025 by defeating Punjab Kings in the final.
