IPL 2026 Captain Performance Overview
Rajat Patidar has once again proven his mettle as the captain of the Indian Premier League (IPL), clinching the title for the second consecutive year. However, the season was a mixed bag for captains across all ten teams. Some leaders excelled not only in guiding their teams but also showcased impressive performances with bat or ball. Conversely, a few captains faced disappointing seasons, potentially marking their last in charge. Rishabh Pant has already stepped down from his role with LSG, and Hardik Pandya is also expected to part ways with the Mumbai Indians. In contrast, players like Patidar, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Riyan Parag, and Ishan Kishan have significantly bolstered their reputations.
IPL 2026 Captain's Report Card
Rajat Patidar (10/10): Patidar made history as the first captain to secure two IPL titles in his initial two seasons. His leadership was exceptional, and he maintained a stellar batting performance throughout the tournament, unlike his previous season's slump. He earned the Player of the Match award in the first qualifier with a remarkable 93 runs off just 33 balls. Overall, he amassed 501 runs while batting primarily at number four, achieving a striking strike rate of 192.69, the highest for a captain with over 500 runs in a season.
Shubman Gill (9/10): Gill demonstrated why he is a captain in two formats for India and remains a contender for the T20I leadership. He guided the Gujarat Titans (GT) to the finals, showcasing the best pace attack in the tournament. The 26-year-old scored 732 runs, including a century in the second qualifier.
Ishan Kishan (8.5/10): Kishan took charge of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during Pat Cummins' absence and impressed with his leadership. He facilitated the transition from seasoned players to newcomers, transforming SRH into a formidable bowling unit. He scored 238 runs in seven innings, leading the team to four victories out of seven matches.
Pat Cummins (7.5/10): Cummins returned to lead SRH mid-season, ensuring their playoff qualification and finishing on equal points with the finalists, RCB and GT. He also contributed with the ball, taking eight wickets in eight matches.
Shreyas Iyer (7/10): Iyer had a promising start with Punjab Kings (PBKS), winning six consecutive matches, but the team then faced a six-match losing streak. He concluded the season with a maiden IPL century, falling just short of 500 runs with 498 runs in 13 innings.
Riyan Parag (6/10): In his first full season as captain, Parag led the Rajasthan Royals (RR) close to the finals, despite his individual performance being underwhelming with 309 runs and only two wickets.
Axar Patel (4/10): Patel had a well-rounded team but failed to reach the playoffs, starting poorly with the bat but finishing with 173 runs and 11 wickets at an economy of 8.18.
Ajinkya Rahane (3.5/10): Rahane lifted team morale after a rough start but fell short of playoff qualification, scoring 335 runs at a strike rate of 135.08.
Ruturaj Gaikwad (3/10): Gaikwad struggled as captain of a young team, scoring only 337 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 123.44.
Hardik Pandya (2/10): Pandya's squad was strong on paper, but a ninth-place finish was disappointing. He managed only 206 runs and four wickets.
Rishabh Pant (2/10): Pant's struggles continued with LSG, where he scored just 312 runs, contributing to the team's last-place finish.
