A Memorable Meeting with the Prime Minister
On November 6, the Indian para-athletic team from the Asian Para Games 2026 shared their uplifting experience of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as both encouraging and unforgettable. They expressed that his motivational words would propel them towards greater achievements, particularly looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.
During the gathering at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi, PM Modi congratulated the athletes for their remarkable performance in Aichi-Nagoya, where India finished fourth overall, amassing a record total of 114 medals.
Nishad Kumar, a double gold medalist in the men's long jump T47 and high jump T47 events, reflected on the special nature of sitting next to the Prime Minister. He remarked, "It was an incredible experience to be in the front row beside PM Modi. We were curious about what he eats to maintain such energy and vitality. We aspire to achieve similar success as he has at his age, and we aim to continue winning medals for our country."
Kumar emphasized that such interactions serve as a significant source of motivation for athletes to strive for excellence.
Pranav Soorma, who secured gold in the men's club throw F51 event, echoed similar sentiments, stating that meeting PM Modi was a memorable occasion that inspired athletes to aim higher. He noted, "The medals we earned belong to the entire nation, and the Prime Minister's encouragement reminds us that this is just the beginning. We must keep pushing ourselves to achieve even greater goals."
Ayush Verma, who won gold in the men's shot put F53 and bronze in the men's javelin throw F53/F54, described his encounter with PM Modi as a unique and motivating experience. He stated, "Winning a medal is important for self-motivation, but interacting with the Prime Minister is truly special. His encouragement will undoubtedly drive us to improve our medal tally at the 2028 Paralympics."
Silver medalist Ajeet Singh Yadav, who competed in the men's javelin throw F46 event, shared that the Prime Minister's ongoing support for athletes has been a source of inspiration. He remarked, "Since 2019, I've met him multiple times, and his commitment to sports has fostered a tradition of welcoming athletes back home. Despite the current challenges, he made time for us, which is incredibly motivating."
Bhagyashri Jadhav, who earned silver in the women's shot put F34 event, expressed that meeting PM Modi after her recent success was particularly meaningful, especially after not medaling at the Paris 2024 Paralympics where she served as India's flagbearer. She shared, "This was my third meeting with the Prime Minister, and it felt wonderful to meet him after winning a medal this time."
Navdeep Singh, a bronze medalist in the men's javelin throw F40/F41 event, noted that PM Modi was well-informed about his achievements and offered personal encouragement during their interaction. He said, "It was thrilling to see how much he knew about us. His blessings and support motivate us to keep striving for excellence."
India concluded the Asian Para Games 2026 with an impressive tally of 30 gold, 35 silver, and 49 bronze medals, surpassing their previous best of 108 medals from the 2022 Hangzhou edition. The contingent comprised 168 para-athletes, a significant reduction from the 309 who represented India in the last Games.
The campaign showcased remarkable performances across various disciplines, including para-badminton, para-archery, and para-athletics, with several athletes achieving world records. Notably, Mona Agarwal made headlines by winning gold in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions SH1, setting both world and Asian Para Games records.
