Understanding DRS Through the Eyes of Anil Chaudhary

New Delhi, June 23: Renowned international umpire Anil Chaudhary shared intriguing insights into the Decision Review System (DRS) strategies employed by some of India's most prominent cricket captains. He highlighted the differing approaches of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni regarding on-field decision reviews.

Chaudhary recounted a lesser-known incident where even the celebrated 'Dhoni Review System' faltered, illustrating that the legendary wicketkeeper-captain was not infallible, despite his reputation for making accurate DRS calls.

According to Chaudhary, Virat Kohli is known for his fervent appeals for reviews, often advocating for them, while Rohit Sharma has adopted a more cautious stance over time, becoming selective with his referrals.

Chaudhary praised MS Dhoni as the ultimate DRS strategist, attributing his success to his exceptional positioning behind the stumps, keen judgment of the ball's trajectory, and composed demeanor. He emphasized that Dhoni's decision-making skills set him apart as the most dependable captain for DRS calls.

“Virat appeals quite often. Even if he had 15 DRS reviews, he might still feel it’s insufficient. Rohit has learned over time; he’s observed others appealing frequently and sometimes advises them to hold back. Dhoni, however, is unparalleled. His positioning is superior because Virat often fields in the cover area or at long-on and mid-wicket. While Virat is frequently at the boundary, it’s hard to blame him for that. But Dhoni’s positioning is exceptional. Wicketkeepers and umpires share a similar perspective. He possesses a better technique and a clearer understanding of the ball's line. His calmness further enhances his ability to make DRS calls,” Chaudhary remarked during an interview on a Media Channel.

He also reminisced about a thrilling IPL match at Chepauk that revealed a rare emotional side of the typically composed former captain.

“In one particular IPL match, there was a contentious decision where I ruled the batsman out. It seemed clear to me, but the ultra-edge replay indicated otherwise. Dhoni made an unusually passionate appeal, which was out of character for him. Even during the DRS review, he confidently reassured his players, ‘No, he’s out, I heard it.’ However, the replay proved him wrong, leading to an overturned decision,” he added.
