Wellington, September 9: The highly anticipated return of the Indian cricket team to New Zealand has sparked significant excitement among fans, with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announcing that over 50,000 tickets have already been sold for the upcoming international home season.
NZC revealed that ticket sales for the summer season commenced for the general public on Monday, following a two-week pre-sale period exclusively for Cricket Nation members, Sky customers, and ANZ customers.
Several matches featuring India are nearing sell-out status, particularly the second T20I in Christchurch, which has already achieved 75% ticket sales.
This marks India's first tour to New Zealand in six years, with the two teams set to compete in five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Test matches starting from October 22.
The demand for T20I matches has been exceptionally high. At Eden Park, the interest has led NZC to open the stadium's sixth tier of seating for the first time since India's 2019 tour of New Zealand. This additional seating will be available for the fourth T20I on October 30.
The sixth tier has been opened only a few times in recent years, including during the 2015 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and a T20I match between New Zealand and Australia in 2018.
This strong response reflects the enthusiasm surrounding India's return, especially after the two teams faced off in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final earlier this year.
Tim Ellis, NZC Head of Marketing, noted that the increasing demand highlights the excitement for the India tour.
“Opening the top level of Eden Park for the first time in years is thrilling and indicates the growing excitement around the tour,” Ellis stated in an official comment.
He also expressed his satisfaction with the ticket sales in Christchurch, where the second T20I has surpassed the 75% mark.
“Hagley Oval matches have always attracted good crowds, but having one of them over three-quarters sold already is quite impressive,” he remarked.
Ellis mentioned that NZC is organizing various activities around the tour to enhance the match experience for fans.
“We are actively planning several events related to the tour and have exciting at-game activations in the pipeline that we believe will provide a fantastic experience for fans of all ages,” he added.
The India tour will kick off New Zealand's international home summer, followed by a visit from the Bangladesh women's team in December.
