India's Strong Start in SAFF Championship

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, on November 6, India's head coach for the SAFF Championship 2026, Naushad Moosa, expressed satisfaction with his team's 3-2 win against Pakistan in their opening match. However, he emphasized the necessity for improved focus and game management after the Blue Tigers allowed two goals during stoppage time.

India initially dominated the match, establishing a 3-0 lead thanks to Suhail Ahmad Bhat's two goals in the first half and Manglenthang Kipgen's strike in the 31st minute. Despite this, Pakistan managed to score twice in added time, forcing India to cling to their lead at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.

Moosa praised his young squad for their energetic start to the tournament, highlighting their offensive drive and dedication against Pakistan. He stated, "Starting a tournament with a win, especially against a rival like Pakistan, is always significant. I'm proud of the players for their character, commitment, and attacking spirit throughout the match. Scoring three goals and earning all three points is a great start that boosts our confidence. However, we recognize this is just the beginning, and we have a long journey ahead in the tournament."

Although India controlled much of the game and created numerous chances, the late goals conceded raised concerns for the coach. Moosa noted that while the team performed well for extended periods, maintaining discipline until the final whistle is crucial.

"We played some excellent football, especially in the first half. We were well-organized, created good chances, and demonstrated a solid understanding of our objectives both in and out of possession. However, the final minutes did not meet our expectations. Allowing two goals in stoppage time is an area we need to analyze and learn from," he remarked.

"At this level, concentration, game management, and discipline until the final whistle are vital. We will review those moments, but I don't want to overshadow the overall effort and performance of the players. There are positives to build on, along with lessons to learn," he added.

India has five days to prepare for their next Group B match against the Maldives on November 11. With additional players expected to join the squad, Moosa outlined the focus areas for the upcoming days.

"Our immediate priorities will be recovery, enhancing our tactical organization, and addressing areas needing improvement. With five days available, it's also crucial to integrate the new players into the squad and ensure everyone comprehends our playing philosophy, responsibilities, and expectations," he explained.

"We aim to enhance our coordination, particularly during transitions, defensive organization, and decision-making in critical moments. Most importantly, we want to utilize this time to foster chemistry and competition within the group. Our goal is to be better prepared for the next match and to continue improving with each game."

Currently, India holds three points in Group B and aims to secure the top position with a favorable outcome against the Maldives. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals, scheduled for November 14, with the final set for November 17.
