The Indian Youth boxing squad has clinched five medals at the World Boxing Futures Cup 2026 in Bangkok, following a series of impressive quarterfinal victories on Friday.
India's prospects for medals were bolstered by the performances of Gunjan (48kg), Joyshree Devi (54kg), Ambekar Meetei (50kg), Chandrika Pujari (51kg), and Radhamani Longjam (57kg), all of whom have advanced to the semifinals, ensuring the nation will take home at least five medals from the event.
During the morning session, Gunjan achieved a decisive 5-0 unanimous decision win against Azerbaijan's Gular Huseynova, while Joyshree Devi showcased her skills by defeating Japan's Yura Kanemaru via Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) in the first round.
Ambekar Meetei also moved forward with a 4-1 victory over Japan's Akira Uekubo in the men's 50kg category.
In the evening session, two additional Indian boxers progressed, with Chandrika Pujari (51kg) overcoming Spain's Andrea Buelga Garcia by RSC in the second round, and Radhamani Longjam (57kg) securing a 4-1 win against England's Siobhan Haley.
However, Sahil Duhan (60kg) faced a setback, losing 1-4 to France's David Harutyunyan in his match.
With five boxers reaching the semifinals, India has guaranteed at least five medals at this prestigious tournament, which features emerging youth boxers from around the globe competing in Youth Olympic weight categories.
The World Boxing Futures Cup, taking place in Bangkok from March 8 to 15, is a crucial developmental event for young athletes, providing them with invaluable international experience as they prepare for future global competitions.
The Indian team is now focused on converting these assured medals into gold in the upcoming semifinal and final matches.
